Solitary Confinement

by John Harder

This is my new home
A dark corner in a cell of stone
The light of day
not allowed to visit me
The clean air to inhale
is so far out of reach
I can't recall the scent
the chill of the breeze
rushing to my lungs
like they're old friends
It hugs my capillaries
with its' longing embrace
and feeding my entire body
with freedom
Freedom....
What freedom?

I'm innocent I tell you!!
Let me out of this Godforsaken hole
Let my eyes see the wonders of nature
once again
Let me find that one thing I seek
At least let me keep looking
Remains there a glimmer of hope
Something to set my eyes on
Somewhere to call home
with hot chocolate
and a fire burning?
Life hasn't moved forward in years
yet the days go so fast
They slip through my hands like water
I think I'm running out of time

...john, existential angst, well described, henry david thoreau said, 'all men [read: all people, duh!] [a forward thinker at the turn of the century and all literary references were of the male gender, so we must forgive him, eh?] we lead live of quiet desperation.'...so true, and many of the ways of desperation's hold on us is that of being around people but not connected with them, i like the darkness metaphor, many times spoken by those depressed...a good description of the inner sanctum, if you will...to me not a sad pome[sic] but a good description of what the Zen buddahist call life here on earth--a suffering, a hell if you will, i love pomes that touch on the unspeakable...this is one.

Charlie's got it right this is a nice write. But freedom is in the mind and you can walk the streets with shackles but still not be free of yourself, your hangups, etc.
