august 4

by Meghan Helmich

my masked face doesn't keep them out.
rolling in the hay and dust,
those girls cower below my shadow
of love and good intentions.

i lied to be sick (and slept instead.)
still, work was started, paused
and finished under creeping thunder.

now i can breathe in my apartment.
