restricted reality

by Charlie Morgan

she smiles, a heart from the pages of Mad magazine
and a question from Alfred E. Neuman, 'What? Me worry?

all she knows at 39 is, she's going to be a Nurse;
more likely she'll be a statistic in the L column.

but at present she's happy to have arrived at College;
wrong, it would be to shatter her 5 yr. old's dream

wallowing in what ifs, she heads off the other offices;
confused; out of place as a trucker's whore at a revival.

i grin, hand out my love along with my business card;
she's off with friends in tow, i'll see her again, often.

Life was once just a magazine, now it's come to this;
balance is made when Kai plops his thumb in his mouth.
