What happened to all the summer songs?

by Dave Fitzgerald

What happened to all those summer songs?
And summers that lasted all summer long?
When everyone knew their neighbours names
and parents would join their kids in games.

I have these grainy memories
like those cinecam home movies
bursting with smiles and miles of bright sunshine,
you in your hand-me-downs and me in mine.

Taking a towel to the outdoor pool and
jumping from the high board like a fool.
Out in the sun running round, getting brown
without the need for lying down.

I have these grainy memories
like those cinecam home movies
bursting with smiles and miles of bright sunshine,
you in your hand-me-downs and me in mine.

All the kids would go out to play
and not go back in til the end of the day
with a handful of bluebells to keep your Mam pleased
so she'd not tell you off for the state of your knees.

I have these grainy memories
like those cinecam home movies
bursting with smiles and miles of bright sunshine,
you in your hand-me-downs and me in mine.

What happened to all those summer songs?
And summers that lasted all summer long?
When everyone knew their neighbours names
and parents would join their kids in games.

Summer, summer, summertime
Summertime.

Summer, summer, summertime
Summertime.

Author's Note: I've taken one verse from my Summer Hols poem from last year. And now... the song... http://h1.ripway.com/TaffFitzCovers/Summer_Songs.mp3

While I read your poem, my own summer (neighborhood) memories came flooding back. We'd play stickball, kick the can, hike in the cornfields, play hide and seek... Seems so long ago that I lived in that cul-de-sac and that I was a carefree child. Thanks for your words Dave.

Memories like these are the goodies we get to pass on to our children and our peers. They are full of joy and rich vibrance that focuses on what is outside the confines of our technological prison we have made for ourselves, and perhaps will get others to look for this richness in what appears to be more ordinary events.

Hi Dave, Great and wonderful write. As for the summer songs, not sure where they went. I believe you've created one here too. Some just don't take the time to do these things anymore. Yes, indeed passing it down to the children. I used to play kick the can, mud ball battles, mud pies. kick ball, riding my bike through mud puddles and clear ones. just loved it. Mom always knew what I had done that day. Go fishing with my homemade pole. I made it myself. Horse shoes. Lovely memories. thanks. :)
