where's the justice

by Charlie Morgan

the dum-dum of Law & Order echos
thru the hallway, down to my study.
study, i shouldn't call it that.
it's a third bedroom, converted.

that's what i am, a converted 10 yr. old.
converted from youth to look old, used.
and yet except for my aches, pains, i'm ok.
it's all you that are moving so rapidly.

the judge claims the bail to be great;
the defendant sneers his vile venom;
the asst. d. a. cajoles the court:
no bail, being her prescription.

all turn, disappear. then, some appear
in the d.a.'s office, plea bargain.
no deal, trial. man, it's gonna take
the whole hour to try this case.

i see the justice system look naked
in the eyes of grammar: a missing "g"
is all it took to throw out the case.
throw out the justice that remained.
