The Picture by Jane E Pearce
It's beautiful-the clouds
hanging from a blue sky,
and below, houses with smoke
escaping the chimneys
trying to join the Heavens.
.
Big houses dressed in ginger bread
along the eaves, windows showing
burgundy drapes framing Victorian sheers.
Shhh- someone is playing "You and I"
on an old upright.
.
The horse and buggy
stops out front to release passengers
who never surfed the internet,
used an IPOD, or worried
about income taxes.
.
They lived an honest, loving
and simple life,accepting ills
that couldn't be cured, knees,
and hips that couldn't be replaced.
Death was an ever present guest
in their houses, and he was ignored
as inevitable.
.
The children were taught to live
moral lives- no back talk- clothes pressed,
lace aprons starched to last the day.
They were gleeful making up their games,
and laughing the hours away.
.
Grandma and Grandpas lived
with the rest of the family,
saying good bye from
the old canopy bed in the front
bedroom when their time came.
.
How I wish i could step
into this picture of Victorian
serenity- just a small step
over the frame, and Scrunchmyself up
extrasmalltofitinthepicture ooooooooooooooo
THERE -that did it!!!!.
.
I can stand again
and look out into my old world.
I plop down and sit
in a red velvet chair-with wonderment,
I can hardly believe
I am really back there.
