Hey! Celebrities!

by Jeffrey Parren

Yes.

You:

Athletes, movie stars, comedians, musicians, etc.

How can I word this nicely?

"STOP BREAKING THE LAW ASSHOLE!"  Thanks Liar, Liar.
or
”STOP RUINING YOUR LIVES AND CAREERS!”

The Un-Irony:

The more money
equals
the more excess.

Not very shocking
these people stuck in puberty
like football players constantly,
constantly, smoking up, or
cutting up coke in your car...
with your MasterCard?!

You are a professional athlete
and maybe steroids make sense.
At least you are taking that juice
to better your career, but drugs,
alcohol, and whatever else
you ingest for moments of pleasure
ruin you for years, and sometimes eternally.

Comedians are living sad, serious lives
of benders and blurry eyes
losing sleep and sanity of mind.

Taking looks back at a career
not remembering writing hooks and jokes
because high on substances
not meant for intake were in control.

Laughable yet incredibly depressing is
the thought of looking back to my poetry
and wondering who wrote it
even though my name is under the title.

Making millions of dollars
and yet the excitement
of financial freedom
is not quite the rush.

Maybe I am jealous.
It's my lack of skill,
lack of drive, or
lack of marketability?

I cannot explain the amount of time
my ass would spend on itchy sand
in far, far, far away places
where maybe drugs don’t exist.

What are/were these people thinking?

Author's Note: I read on ESPN.com that Travis Henry, the running back for Broncos was caught smoking Marijuana, AGAIN, and could/should be suspended for a year. Ricky Williams of the Dolphins lost productive years of his career due to Weed. Matt Jones, wide receiver for the Jaguars was arrested for cutting coke in the driver's seat of his car with a credit card, "Priceless" or terribly troubling? Comedians and musicians who have died early due to excessive intake of momentary highs have not only robbed themselves and their families of so much but robbed us of seeing what creative genius really is. What's even worse is that a lot of these people are Role Models, not the guy who dedicates his life to the homeless or some worthy cause. I find myself asking if it is better to struggle in a revolving stressful life of debt or to have all the money in the world and deal with all those stresses because it seems like a bunch of people cannot handle lots of money no matter what background they come from? As for the "poem," it is more of a rant than creative piece, but I wanted to get it out so I did...

I can't agree that it's as cut/dry as all that (well, I suppose it is for athletes) but I can't deny that this is strong, compelling, wonderfully brutal piece of writing. Well done.
