Sadness

by Timothy Somers

Sadness weighs heavy on my shoulders,
its fingers seize my back,
it cloaks my skin with sullenness,
and shades my feelings black.

Its darkness dims my eyesight
And leadens my resolve,
it pools about my ankles
its shadow life evolves
a heartbeat dread.

My shoes fill with tears wrought,
bought and paid in years long past.
I cannot last with burdens such as these.

Breath heavy, arms full of careful pain,
I move and step one step
without a gain in game
or triumph over distance passed,
one foot, one more,
the same as last I traveled thus,
the stealthy thrust of olding
sending wide my path,

I am not the first to pass this way,
to play in time without a mind
for joy once felt, and feel it last no more.

A deadness seized my core this time,
this one last time,
I pray this one last time.
