the entreaty of the frog princess

by Maria Francesca

the woods are dark
and thorny
and some say a Beauty
sleeps somewhere within
but others say
it's just a fairy tale
and anyway
she's hidden herself
too well for you to find;
maybe
she just wants a little rest.

the moat's a mile across
and the walls
are high and thick
and though Rapunzel smiles
quite sweetly
she wears her hair
much shorter these days;
maybe
the constant pulling
isn't worth the headache to her.

meanwhile, Mr. Charming,
it's just you and me
here by the pond --
no obstacles
except my outer mien
and your preconceptions --

why not put those away
for just a moment

and pucker up?
