The Punishment

by Alison McKenzie

I remember with perfect clarity
The day you made me a
Peanut-butter and mayonnaise sandwich

With lettuce.

I'd a particularly bad attitude.
I was six.
You donned an evil grin
And told me if I was good,
You'd make me a surprise for lunch.

I'm sure in some twisted way,
It was my punishment
For driving you crazy.

Only, it backfired
Because, I liked it.
And to this day,
When I’m feeling particularly defiant,
I fix that sandwich
And relish every bite.

Author's Note: For my mother. I'll never forget that sandwich, or the day she tried to pass it off as a treat!!! LOL!!!

...'evil grin' wow, lovely[somewhat hurtful] traipse down memory lane...my memories fall, like from a ledge, involving 'aunts'[certain aunts] who would 'pass something off' as you say for gooooood...pateweeeew! lovely lil' waltz of childhood...alllll the memories are packed in all of us, thanks for letting this one out...
