what i'll make of it all and what you'll never learn

by Kalikala Smith

Years down the road,
I'll look at this and,
maybe with a soft smile,
remember the good times.
But that is,
years down the road.

Now,
the road I have,
is deceiving,
menacing,
grueling,
and you are there at the top,
of the next incline,
smirking and flaunting,
your supposed infinite wisdom.

What you'll never realize now,
or years down the road,
is that you've built a mountain of expectations,
impossible to climb,
and even your own self cannot make it to the top.
How can I compete with the unattainable,
with perfection,
with the sad reality that if you're not in control,
you'll figure out something...

What I'll make of it all,
and what you'll never learn...
no one,
not even you my dear,
is perfect,
and our imperfections,
let us be human,
and learn from our mistakes.

Here's to one of us,
getting to the end of the road,
alone,
shaken,
and miserable.
And here's to the other,
never making it to the end,
bruised and weary,
but happy and content in her location.
