broken mirror

by Jared Fladeland

a shard of glass on the ground, reflecting a thousand mid-noon images.
i am enveloped in blue sky,
cut sharply by the green of evergreens and sycamore trees.

i want to go out to play before the sun soaks
my body with heat, like a hot dog burning in the pan.

my cat sits in my lap, staring at me
as if this is the first time she's ever really looked at me.
she rubs her face against mine for a few minutes,
and then stubbornly bites my nose with sharp little teeth
to remind me that i'm alive.

from a windowsill i can see the world,
if only just a small slice,
and i want to go out to play,
but i'm far too comfortable going no where.

I think the above said it best, and I think this piece nails that sentiment right through the heart.

Kiss-bites from cats somehow bring us from whatever semi-dreamlike state we're in, back to the present world. I see this as a micro-cosm, where in the present state, there's a calm and gentle state that you're unwilling to break. Too often we go continuously and just sitting quietly, doing nothing, is a very strange act. I like how you describe this lazy afternoon.
