Flood

by Bob Arcania

Last night it rained only.

Only on the other side
of the street.
The side
with the river
overflowing
its banks.

And the road kept the water, hugged it close.
The road became a river and rose higher
in front of me, a wall.

The water rose into a wall.

And I waited to see the top,
for it to overflow like the old river,
but the new river kept rising higher
never outward. Soon the whole river was the road,
and the towns built stairs to the top.
And the people built boats shaped like cars.
And there grew a new way of living.

Nobody spoke of the empty riverbed.

Author's Note: Iowa City is floating right now, it's all anyone can talk about, cut in half by the river, but it can only go down now, and pieces will float away, and the damage is left behind, but at least I live on a hill.
