No Haiku

by Joe Cramer

Dickinson didn't write a single haiku,

Shakespeare didn't either, it's true.

Yet the both loved nature, and the poetic form

I wonder if this is cause for alarm?

So, since I never, ever know what to do,

I will always and forever write haiku.

Author's Note: The first genre of poetry I ever wrote/studied was the haiku, and have been penning them since... it helps that I taught them for years too... I prefer the "traditional" style of 5-7-5 in the syllable count, with nature as the predominating theme, though often I vary my approach .... the Japanese form still remains my favorite to peruse... I like Basho and Issa. Many American and English poets like Lowell, Pound, Stevens and Williams have used the traditional Japanese haiku form, but not Shakespeare or Dickinson that I know of... I wonder if Ogden Nash tried it.... ???
