Quit If You Must

by Alison McKenzie

Quit if you must.
I truly understand.
It's a strange affinity
Floating through miles not traveled
Into hearts unbidden for the likes of this.
It is a paradoxical intimacy that touches
The edges of boundaries never crossed.

Perhaps the colors of my wings
Will appear in truth, finally -
For no magnificent brilliance
Is reflected from my mirror,
No hurricanes mounting
From the foolishness of my world.
No, I will live in truth
And burn in the flame I am drawn to,
For this is my destiny.

Though you must understand
The drink of your words
Is sweeter than any elixir
Tasted by this thirsty tongue,
The most intimate touch
From a hand never visited,
A secret, dear treasure
For my eyes and only mine.

So, quit if you must,
And I shall fathom a future,
My satchel full of your generous gaze.
I feel the comforting touch
Of a southeasterly, warm wind,
And this is enough,
No,
More than enough.

You're on a roll Lady! Those last two stanzas really pack a punch! This started good and just kept getting better and better. How do you do it?

Well done! Someone is very lucky and it sounds like it is you.
