ars poetica

by Meghan Helmich

overthinking the words,
conceiving a fleshy body for hands
to fondle, occupy and approve.

staring down the empty,
dominating a dragging laziness
until it curls around ankles
and unravels a contrite caress.

what to do with a rag baby?
lying on its back, rounded belly
rising into the fluid air.

eventual heavy defeat
as growth stops this progression.
focusing too much on the ringing
cries and not the hungry lips.
