i miss you most in drunkenness

by Lauren Singer

what were once the fierce eyes of kinder times
fall upon deaf ears tonight.
i suckle a bottle neck and think about
your fingers and all their dirty unholiness,
the ground clenching beneath you
and the way you groped your way unconsciously into my elastic bands
and fell into me, the way a solider does a war.
i miss you and your pining needs. your simple ways
and your harsh euphemisms, your broken english.
but yes, you're right,
i did always understand you.
say asparagus for me will you? the way you
mispronounced it always endeared you
and i like to see you humbled.
yes, the world spins sacred tonight
and i find myself reaching for you in the blackness
of an unearthed moment, feeling my way
through bedsheets knowing you are somewhere else entirely
and wrapped around another's womb.
but i will remember you for what you were:
stroking circles into the palms of my hands
and asking me to waltz with you,
prerequisites of no one watching.
