smile

by Maria Francesca

Smile, they tell you.
You're never fully dressed without one.
Do it, though your heart is aching.
Offer it along with a wink.

Let the sun shine in.
Put on a happy face
and walk on the sunny side of the street.
Ac cen tu ate
the positive

Then tell me
when it became a crime
to just feel
what you feel

no matter how dark
and messy
and evil you feel.

No matter what they told you in kindergarten,
sad is not a four-letter word;

it shows up on your doorstep sometimes
and you could refuse to let it in -
make it sleep out on the porch-
but it will just wait for you.

Anesthetize it
with drugs
or booze
or work
and eventually
you'll kill all the joy
along with it.

Or
you could just let it in
to stay the night
and send it on its way in the morning.

You choose.

Smile, they tell you.
Fuck that.

Feel.

maria, you seem to be resisting your training young lady, and you better straighten-up and fly right, you'll be sorry one of these days, oh and you just wait til your father gets home, young man...a lovely suggestion, just flow w/ life, but feel, embrace all your feelings, mmmmgood one here, charlie
