Skipping by Don Matley
We hopped, skipped and jumped in youth
We skipped school sometimes
We skipped flat stones skimming across the lake
We skipped meals to play
We skipped rope
We skipped yesterdays for tomorrows
Until tripping into middle age
We break the rope and resort to responsibility
Now we skip payments
We skip affairs and hop lovers and jump mates
We skip our children growing up
We skip appointments and duck obligations
We skip our youth
We skip our lives
We skip our good intentions
And Time now turns the rope
Too fast for our slowing and heavy feet
We trip and fall and skin our knees through dress pants
We trip our health
We trip our indexed wealth
We trip over oh so many many things
Defeating aspirations of becoming queens and kings
And we trip on our words and on our remorseful breath
But we never alas trip on Death.
And if we had it all over to do again
Would it all be just the very same?
We'll never know....but just perhaps
We would have joined another game.
