Near Arnhem by Leonard M HawkesIt was there in the East,
Where the soil is sand
And dry pine and scrub oak
Thrive among the brem
And sparse coarse heide;
I heard them whisper--
Those who paid the greatest price
Those who made the sacrifice.
Oh, I'd heard the story,
Knew facts and figures from school,
Seen technical maps,
Heard survivor witnesses--
But in the old dunes
In dust and spotty shade--
I felt that blood that paid the price
And heard the voice of sacrifice.
