night falling

by Mary Frances Spencer

fumble in the dark
we grasp for the few straws left
tunneling fear with apathy
numbing mind-blowing news
with the prescriptive or addictive
shopping unsatisfied
artificial desires

we hang
on the edge
poised over raging waters

can we find
courage compassion
a way to soothe or heal
we must let go
plunge into the morning
stand up and swim
for dear life

Author's Note: It's been really hard to digest the news lately...so many disasters, wars, ...trying to figure out how I can help. MFS

You provide a intense picture of how helpless we can feel sometimes. Nicely written.

"we hang on the edge poised over raging waters"...it's just so powerful, the way you've conveyed the current world condition. It's part of why I am focusing on letting go of attachment to the material realm...

Odd....with reading just the first couple of lines, I knew where you were going. I've been wanting to write about this, but haven't found the way. You did it well!

and good title, too.
