dear dad

by Jessica A Steenbock

dear dad
before you go
i want to tell you something

before you walk away
i have something to say

while you try to hang up
i am not done yet

i love you
for all that you are
and all that you gave

i no longer hate you
despise you
wish things had been different

i love you
for the person you are
and the dad you have been

i need you around
i need your word

because i love you
for all that you are
and all that you have tried to be

i love you
for what we have never really had for all the things i can say i love you and that, i hope, is enough
