I saw God this afternoon.

by Maria Francesca

I saw God this afternoon
in the quick-check line at the grocery store
watching me shyly
from her shopping-cart seat
surrounded by vegetables
and frozen dinners
and soup cans
and playing with a lock
of her own curly hair.

She sucked her middle two fingers
and watched me with enormous brown eyes,
then smiled at me just before she and her cart
disappeared into the throng of shoppers
and before she left she said this to me:

Take a look, she said,
because I am your past
and I am your future.

And I'm going to be
just fine.

A moment in time clearly observed and expressed in transcendence. (God is where we find Him or see Him (genderless)in His creation.)
