there is such peace

by Maria Francesca

there is such peace

in watching The Devil
do his work,

in sitting back in my chair
wringing hands
and gnashing teeth

and knowing all this
is unavoidable -

there is a balance,
after all,
between good and evil,

each keeping the other in check -

and who am I
to raise my voice
and disturb this quiet battle?

who am I
to raise the hands God gave me,

to turn my head
to listen to the sounds of unhappiness
and respond with feeble hope
of making change

in an arena so much wider
than my puny self
can begin to comprehend?

No.

it is not my job.
it is not my responsibility.
it is not my place.

and there is such peace
in knowing that.

That is one hell of an opening statement. Powerful work indeed.
