Could

by Elizabeth Seago

Does she give you everything you need?
To the point that you needn't think of me?
Never in the way you used to?

Do you supress the boldest thoughts of you near me?
Or have they escaped your lovehungry mind completely?

Does my kiss still dance on your tongue?
I knew others would come,
I suppose it just seems a bit abrupt.
Not that I'd ever rejoice at the thought of
Your lips pressed up against
Anyone at all.

It's silly, really.
We've never been anything much,
You and I.
We were young and foolish.
A whirlwind of lovely words,
Which to a naked ear would sound a bit absurd.
Oh, but they never truly understood
Our lovely undertones and all we could
Have been.

But really all we ever were was
That tragic one syllable word.
