Cuffed & Defeated

by Elizabeth Seago

I feel as though I was always
Stealing kisses from you
And darlin', I can't stand to be
A thief anymore.

We were always so comfortable
And worn in.
Laced with guilt
And the everpresent weight of
Goodbye.

I hear you're giving your love
To someone else.
And that's to be expected.
But the leftovers from our
Unlabled romance are still
Churning in my gut.
And this indigestion is making it hard
To move on.

Your words are still ringing in my ears
And it's more painful than you'd ever know,
But bit by bit,
I'm making less room for you here.

Author's Note: "I was up on your wall - smaller than small. In a half-painted frame, where the wood wouldn't stain. And I hope this reminds you of the part you couldn't change in me.."

moving on shows the bravery and teeth of an army of millions. leave behind the things that will not make you happier, stronger or more fulfilled. everyone's got some growing to do.
