I have seen folks

So downtrodden

That they never look up.

Never make eye contact,

Refuse a simple smile.

I can't tell if they're

Homeless,

Blameless

Or even shameless.

They appear to be

A functioning part of society.

(I've even worked with a few.)

It's just that they have allowed themselves become so broken

That there is nothing left.

I, too, have been downtrodden,

But not on this day.
