Topic: Prose Won't Bite You by Amanda J CobbA misleading phrase;
'bite' is too small an idea.
Prose has more
force, more risk behind it
than a mere nibble.
It sinks its teeth,
penetrating veins and sinew,
an iron-jaw grip
that laps up the ink seeping from your wounds.
It rips chunks
out of your hand, your heart,
your head,
a ravening beast intent on satiation,
always demanding more.
So rest easy.
Prose rarely just 'bites.'
If you escape with no more
than a few blunt teethmarks on your skin,
consider yourself lucky. 03/20/2008 Author's Note: The screenplay I'm working on was intimidating me. I decided to work on something smaller. :)

Posted by Gabriel Ricard on 03/21/08 at 11:16 PM Yeah, I like doing that as well. Especially when it turns out as satisfying as I imagine writing this was for you. |
Posted by Nancy Ames on 03/23/08 at 12:27 AM Yay! So where is the line between prose/poetry anyway? Some poetry seems more like vertical prose to me, and good prose is often quite lyirical, no? |
