Monday Monkey

by Maria Francesca

forty-eight hours
spent with family
spent with strangers in touristy places
spent in the warm sunshine
spent with that horrible Monday Monkey
climbing up my back
waiting for me to let my guard down
so it can screech into my ear -
"deadlines!", it howls, and
"compromises!!"

forty-eight hours
of every week
spent watching around corners,
raw nerve endings
lit up like Las Vegas
waiting to feel those hairy paws
wrapped around my neck
as the clever fiend changes tactics,
whispering softly -
"this weekend thing,
it's only a mirage,
the breath of air between
those five-day dunks in the drowning tank",

then it clucks in mock sympathy,
"you poor, silly dear,
you corporate whore,"
and it grins so very widely
as it swings back and forth
from the collar of my shirt;

and I'm certain I could kill the little bastard
if I only had the right lottery ticket.
