Audrey

by Richard Vince

She walks in monochrome,
An island of the fifties
In the vast ocean of
This youthful century.

Heads turn: the
Black and white of
Their eyes expand.

I see her in harsh colour,
But think of her in
Atmospheric black and white,
With the soft, warm feeling
Of nostalgia countering
The remoteness of unreality.

I begin to wonder how real
She really is: whether the image
She projects is of herself, or
Whether she is hiding behind the look
Of a dead style icon.

I also wonder how many
Other people notice
Her lack of smile.
Do her wide eyes reveal
Fear, or are they just
Part of the act?

Hi Richard. This is a terrific "portrait". I find things I like in every stanza. Added to my favs. Great work, a unique and well expressed idea. Delighted. Thanks.

Powerhouse portrait, sir.

Most of these are such objective descriptives that I can only barely perceive just a smallest edge of cynicism in your observations. I'm still left wondering....
