Caught Up

by Jeffrey Parren

It's sometimes the question
that's so hard to answer
when your response
may answer another question
about the same thing.

Take time to listen.

Stop getting caught up in
-business
-mental masturbation
-guilty pleasures
-"my suit is better than yours"
-the $5,000 prostitute.

These business men come and go
and most are the same
because they are nobody
but the second they become somebody
their focus changes
and the corporate card carries strength
with a slice of ego on top.

My daily nightmare wears a suit,
rarely says "hi" and means it,
and orders you around like a mule
unless of course you are a woman
who he oodles with assumed ownership
and once the wine takes hold
his hands will too
and you can only hope
that one of the clients sees this man's faults
and stops doing business with him,
but those hopes are never cashed in
and the suffering continues on.

Author's Note: Working in a high-volume NYC steakhouse helps pay the bills but also adds to my frustration about the human race...

The human race... we're all racing for the same finish line. Some of us are actually lucky to be the waiter and we're all being waited on... Some will never reach the finish line. It's truly a shame. Very thought provoking.

I probably would have lost my damn mind myself. I'd say you captured the general stupidity and madness pretty well.

WOW! Corporate America from 5pm-1am is so captured here... living the frustration with you... Would you like a glass of chianti with this? Yes, we should sit and vent frustrations over a glass of wine, a martini and a scotch... Keep living! Keep writing! ~N

I used to wait tables in Manhattan, too. I know exactly where you are coming from. Excellent specifics here. I especially like "and once the wine takes hold his hands will too". Great job.!
