He Sleeps by Genevieve Sturrockhe sleeps
splayed out on the sofa
like a giant ragdoll
his head cradled against my hip
my arm curved along his cheek
so i can work while
he sleeps
arms crossed on his chest
like a child playing dead
legs thrown over the end of arm of the sofa
for he is too long to fit comfortably
and yet,
he sleeps
soft snores escape as he breathes
hands twitch as his body relaxes
his soft and supple lips devoid of emotion
a rare sight on his normally expressive face
he sleeps
this giant of a man
who makes me feel safe
simply because he loves me
and accepts me for exactly
who and what i am
he sleeps
this champion of my heart
who has stood beside me
given me courage
defended my honor
protected me from harm
and still holds me
in such high regard
he sleeps
and for now
i am his protector
his head cradled against my hip
my arm curved along his cheek
as i work
he sleeps 03/10/2008 Author's Note: it's not much after months of nothing...but i gotta start somewhere...and he sleeps as i write tonight

| Posted by Kathleen Wilson on 03/11/08 at 06:00 AM I like the mix of images here, all pointing the same way, from "ragdoll" to "giant". I love the repetition of "he sleeps" which seems very appropriate to sleep itself, like hearing his breath while sleeping. the switch of you as protector is good too, up late, writing, at work, keeping watch over him. |
