To My Inlaw The Outlaw

by Nancy Ames

I recognized the rainbow
in the night when you
were waiting for the sun
to rise on the dark side
of the moon.

When I was kid, the sun
would melt the pavement
on the way to school -
I saw the hot, shifting
colours on the slickened
road, remember?

And today the black pools
in the swamp said the same
thing: forbidden joy.

Morning is in the eyes of
your children and the tiny
roots are moving into the
soil.

Author's Note: This poem is about the young men who are tempted by the dark side and the families who love and need them on this side, on the sunny side of life.
