What Drives A Woman to Curse Goodbyes

by Elizabeth Seago

Piercing bluegreen eyes
Drowning in honesty
Voicing inevitable truths;
Conveying everything except
What she's been aching to hear.

Reality.

Beardkisses,
Backrubs,
Champagne.
A week of solitude-
An escape from what this world expects of us.

You brought us down too soon, darlin'.
Heavy conversations that a vulnerable drunken heart couldn't handle on a Friday night.

And, no, I didn't want to be rescued.
I'd stay here forever if you'd say you'd try.
I ain't no Rapunzel,
And I'd never need any savin' if you were right here by my side.

I'm not too sure how this heart is doin',
So please forgive me if I'm fading.
But the doctor hasn't been in yet.
No, the doctors never came.

I wonder if this kills you, too.
Do you ever let me get to you?
Did you ever really mean the things you'd say?

...Because my words were truths and try as I might, I'll never be over you.

But on nights like these, I'd settle for under.

Nice last line. That's what I'd call a classic closer.

it sounds like unreciprocated feelings. seems as if...your head is deeper in the sand of love than is his...which probably makes the sting a little stronger. looks as though you're in for a recovery period where unfortunately, he may have gotten a fairly decent headstart. it feels like puppy love on steroids gone the way all relationships like this do. tough stuff...hard to swallow, but necessary for the next step.
