what's changed?

by Charlie Morgan

i was samuel butler hearing
the call of new discovery;
lands lolling remote, alive
with differences of life.

where man could be himself,
differences were tolerated,
a chuckle brought a laugh,
a man's hand his character.

as he peered in every bush,
every river's crooked bend
and saw neither, so do i;
an 1800 european man awaited
a 1215 document of promise;
he had visions of Magna Carta
applied to all landless men.

a 2008 visitor would see the same.

This is such a good line : "lands lolling remote, alive". Today's explorers have exchanged the ocean for the skies, always going where freedom beckons, and then there are the frontiers of the mind, of course, where we sometimes venture.

Point well taken, sir. Very cool work here.

Excellent Charlie. It's a sobering piece that many ought to read.

Take comfort in this ....there was most likely a similar question posed in prose long ago in Rome....the men and the words may change but the scene remains as always...the same
