by Maria Kintner

If you jiggle your key long enough,
the grooves and hinges relent,
and you will find yourself within the place
I have never left.

I can feel your deep footprints, making
toe-marks into the carpets,
and the stale air, leaving with the open door
behind you.

It is always such a quiet surrender,
a virgin's soft whimpering,
that leads us seaching back,
to where we were before.

Welcome home.
