Key West

by George Hoerner

plates of tidbits
glasses of hellos
the easy hellos -
looks across the room
who is talking
who listening
most closely ensconced
in their subtle solitude

this room full
of anxious people laughing
in unexpected gratitude
while washing down
their lost souls
with chasers
of small talk

while i watch pelicans
search for their sustenance
above the waters
and i look for mine
in these words
hoping to find solace
in this seduction of me by
the wonderment of being

feel like I'm there...very nicely painted.

Great second stanza. I've been privy to that scene entirely too many times myself.
