A Sprig of Evergreen by Ken HarnischI say I could do without the sentiment
But it has a way of drifting
Back with the tide
Every now and then
Some sprig of evergreen
I threw into
The water
On some unremembered day
That keeps floating in my heart
I smile to see it there
Rocking on the waves
Remembering your smile,
Your eyes,
The way we talked
Into the afternoon
Before the kiss that served
Both as greeting and as epitaph
To the moment that we were
I tossed it in the ocean
Knowing how the ocean is a vast
Forgiving thing
Whose currents hold many twists
And turns for shipwrecked
Souls and poets who linger
At the rail of memory
Only to spy in the relentless waves
Again and again, that sprig of evergreen

Posted by Paganini Jones on 02/13/08 at 11:51 PM Sweet and lyrical. Glad to see you aren't as old and cynical as you would pretend. I shall take this poem as written to me, as will every other woman who reads it! |
