It's february, and I've had just about enough of this

by Jolie Jordan

I don't tell my mother how I'm in debt
or how the fridge is empty along with my stomach
I just fill her with hugs
and we talk about the weather over hot tea.

I forget to mention how I've lost weight
or how I spend every weekend out under bright lights
telling myself I have something in common
with people I don't even know.

The bartender fills up my glass
and I toss him a cheap smile.

Somehow, this is like that time we ran into eachother;
I made comments about how I'm glad that you're happy.
I didn't tell you those were lies.

I love that first stanza. You've captured a great scene here.

Tell me about it. There's something in his fake smile and little nod when you say that that makes every yesterday-girl on earth wanna slap him. Mainly because you know he knows you're lying to him. Nice piece. You grabbed me.

well basically everything in this, in its entirety, starting with the first line, describes my life of late. bravissimo, +fav.

smart & real. very real. i think its the samaritan in us that insists on giving off these false impressions...either way, it's a rather gruelling, yet beautiful part of life in my opinion.

Really well written! Very like a miniature story. I enjoyed this immensely.

Well done, Jolie. Everyday, I'm asked "How are you?" and the answer is always "Fine". My life is most always up and down, but who really wants to know the truth?

I really like this. It feels open.

I once heard that when someone answers that they are 'fine,' it actually means F'd up, Insecure, Neurotic, and Emotional. This piece really illustrates that, what goes on underneath the smile.
