Separation

by Tony Whitaker

This chambered muscle
Pulses as it aches for you
The blood races passing
Arterial walls thickened
By years of love

Now an arc of earth separates
Not so long by universal measure
But infinite when no time is spent
Touching
With returning eyes

02/08/2008

Author's Note: Dedicated to my wife. These 4334 miles that separate us seems infinite in scope. I miss her...

Do you at least get to talk to her on the phone? This poem expressed your longing seemingly on a molecular level. Praying your house sells soon!

I love that the heart is not mentioned but described in the first stanza, the fullness and strength of love. Then the second stanza-- the beautiful "arc of earth separates"--the succinctness of the lines of comparison---"universal time" to the intimate personal time... and the longing for "touching' --this is exquisite, and obviously (counting the miles) the emotional depth spilled forth into heightened expression! A gift.
