early grave

by Mary Frances Spencer

doubt
starts the fall
pebbles
each one assessing worth

the avalanche
stifles expression
an early grave
should not pile up
or bury

but disperse
flat stones
skipping over
cause and effect

the round
going down
under
leaving concentric
rippling moons

that travel
softly
outward on
silvery waters
