Scratch and Claw (subjective)

by Alison McKenzie

Some days it’s a battle
Just to be nice
To live in my own skin
Without you getting under it

I don’t know where this rage is headed
And I’ve been wracking
This worn out old piece of skull
Trying to get to the root
Shoveling through garbage
Until the sun comes up
But never reaching the bottom
Of the stench.

I loathe the sensations
No escape
My skin crawls
Fingernails full of mud
And I can’t breathe

Some days the battle doesn’t end
And I don’t sleep at all.

I read this one second... the objective view shows that it is a general thing, perhaps personality, human nature, and seen in that way, with personalizing the problem. This "you" poetically gives a more conversational rather than philosophical view, an intimate one. I like both. One could vary the poem some, or maybe nmake it two verses!
