remnants

by Meredith C Hartwell

there's a hair on the wall in the shower
and it's dark and straight and short
i think it's yours
and you were here
i don't remember
if it was yesterday or last week
or last month or last year
but you were here
does it matter
you were here

there are dishes on the table and in the sink
with crumbs from food i didn't eat
when you were here
and the soda in the fridge
it still has fizz
i don't drink Pepsi
you were here
was it yesterday
last week or last month or last year
you were here
i don't remember
does it matter
you were here

and there are stains in my bed and on my heart
from the love we made together
i didn't force you
to drive thirty miles in the snow at 2am
because you asked me
“do you want me there”
of course i want you here
and you were here
and it was last week and last month and last year
and you were always here
when you held me
said you loved me
couldn't stop
and you kissed me on my shoulder
on my neck and on my back
and you were here
does it matter
you were here
yesterday and last week
and last month and last year
you're always here

and maybe if i don't wash the sheets
or the dishes or the tub
pieces of you will still be here
will you be here
tomorrow or next week or next month
or next year

i don't want to move
if you're not here
so i'm still here
i'm still waiting
does it matter
will it matter
i was here

Author's Note: I suppose these are lyrics again. There is something of a melody to it in my mind, though very minimalistic and fragile. Everything is very fragile right now.

Lyrics, poetry. It's all the same to me. The same way good is good no matter how you want to label it. And this is very good indeed.
