Family Feelings

by David Garner

I feel like my grandmother
when I write a letter.

I feel like my father
when I slouch my shoulders and rub my temples.

I feel like my mother
when I rise from a table.

I feel like my brother
when I'm about to fall asleep.

And I always feel like my sister
when I fight with my sister.

The repetition and focus on "feel like" really brings this poem into feeling, under the skin. I know this "feeling"--not just words! It's a subtle thing, but very identifiable, when one can recognize the instictively adopted habits of relatives. It's fascinating, and usually easier to see in someone else--how a person sets his jaw, just like his father does, for instance. Little "slouch" and "rub"... these are tiny things, but they really spark strongly--a feeling memory. Wonderful that this aknowledgement is introspective and put into a poem!
