My New Year's Resolution

by Maria Francesca

This year
I resolve
to not be so darn smart.

This year
I'll try
not to make perfection such an art.

This year
I resolve
to be restrained in my humility

and do my very best
to keep a lid on my abilities.

This year
I'll live simply -
no bling,
no flashy cars.

This year
I'll abstain
from dating handsome movie stars.

With support from my employer,
I'll say no to fame and wealth.

With some help from friends and family,
do without my mental health.

I'll put aside all common sense,
embrace my every fear;

I know that I can do this -
I've been doing it for years.

So start your trendy diets,
promise greater contributions;

my continued mediocrity's
my New Year's resolution.
