This Is the Dumbest Poem I've Ever Written

by Michelle Floyd

This is the dumbest poem I've ever written -
I'm sitting in the break room at work while you
bleed coffee black into Styrofoam and my teeth
ache for medium point against the skin
This is the dumbest poem I've ever written -
because the way your stark-hot shirt tucks
madly into your crevices
distracts me from some unknown force
at the gait of your hips

When I ran out of ink I implored
the stain of your tongue
and your eyes followed me across the floor
This is the dumbest poem I've ever written
lost where your smoke-line smiles end
We get the feeling we've done this before
The stupid things trailing us
Gone and lovely and evermore.

I think this is pretty damn good. But hey, what the hell do I know, right? Heh.
