Light of Obliteration

by Alison McKenzie

There are evil-doers in the world -
There is no denying it.
It just doesn’t make sense to me,
How they live in their own skin,
Managing to surpass survival,
Doing wrong to others -
No conscience,
No regret,
Perpetuating the negative state
Of ill-will and sometimes more,
Causing real damage to lives
Without apparent consequence
To their own well being.

Some of these weeds actually blossom,
Simulating fragrant roses in the courtyard,
Admiringly lovely in their raiment -
Colors I can’t even afford to imagine.

I understand that there must be free will,
But I don’t understand how “free” to do evil
At the tragic expense of others
Thrives so in our advancing age of
Supposed awareness
And spiritual enlightenment.

When I question God at all,
It is for this reason alone.

Evil is alive and seemingly well,
And it leaves me sick at my stomach,
Broken hearted and paying a price
Exacted by those who have not
Rightly earned it.

I don’t even hope for their demise.
I hope for their hearts to be filled with light,
And if that exposure obliterates,
So be it.
