To a Purely Hypothetical Hero

by Nancy Ames

"How easily we took the chance
of stepping off the ego`s rim.
I could never do that dance
in any way with him.

My armour wasn't any good;
he'd always find my weakness.
I always knew I really should
disarm his lust with meekness.

I cried with mingled hope and dread,
"Love isn't very nice!"
You laughed up at the sky and said,
"It's cheap at twice the price."

Author's Note: True love is rare and precious and to understand that is heroic.
