I pass this tree (haiku) by Kathleen Wilson
I pass this tree each day
finally I can tell
it's magnolia
01/21/2008 Author's Note: I've been busy with so many wonderful poetry events I have been attending and hosting locally. (See my journal for the most recent) This haiku is not part of my New Year series... I am still working on that and will post more soon. This haiku was written at our local Southern California Haiku Study Workshop. We have a 20 minute writing session during the workshop, and our poems are read aloud (anonymously) for a friendly vote. This is an old tradition in haiku. I wrote this one in the courtyard of the Pacific Asia Museum, where our workshop takes place, when I noticed the tree in bloom... and noticed for the first time... it was a magnolia! (beautiful!) This was a favorite of many listeners...

Posted by Don Matley on 01/22/08 at 02:26 AM Often we enjoy things in this wsorld without realizing what they actually are...especially inanimate objects...even living trees....I spent many hours beside a grove of 100 year old Florida oaks with their great spreading branches...your poem brought that memory back......nice... |
