A Warning about Your Boyfriend

by David Garner

If he tells you,
"I love you more than I love myself, and I love myself a lot,"
I know it might just make you melt,
but he's melted all the other girls with that same line.
It seems to work for him,
so he uses it.

If he tells you,
"I realize anywhere you are is where I call home,"
I know it might make you all warm and fuzzy,
but he's turned all the other girls just as warm and just as fuzzy.
It seems to work for him,
so he uses it on everyone.

*sigh* So, waiting for those words is a snare and illusion? Is that what you're sayin?

A haunting warning, that mirrors itself, line by line. Can be read in various ways, as might apply to the reader. Has the feel of a letter, of a well formed monologue, from someone who knows. And why does he know? The last line extends the last line of the first stanza, and applies itself to "everyone"... which has a chilling effect. The feeling of indrawn bitterness, and an intimacy presides.

You captured the basic truth that I think every girl knows at heart, but is too enamoured to admit to herself. I like the repeated form in the second stanza.

Too bad you can't put labels on them... so we would know ahead of time. I would love to have this on a L/XL/XXL t-shirt and hand it out to a few guys. ~N
